Today, a memorial service was held at Woodlawn Cemetery in New York to mark the 90th anniversary of the passing of Mihajlo Pupin, the great Serbian patriot, scientist, inventor, and benefactor. The service and prayers were conducted by Protopresbyter-Stavrophor Živojin Jakovljević, head priest of the Saint Sava Cathedral in New York, and Protopresbyter-Stavrophor Đokan Majstorović, head priest of the Serbian Orthodox Church of Saint John the Baptist in Paterson. Following the prayer service, the Consul General of the Republic of Serbia, Vladimir Božović, addressed those in attendance, emphasizing Mihajlo Pupin’s indelible contributions to science and Columbia University, as well as his historic role in advancing the well-being of the Serbian people. In his speech, Božović highlighted that Mihajlo Pupin represents one of the most exalted examples of Serbian patriotism, whose personal sacrifices and diplomatic efforts left a profound and lasting mark on Serbia’s future. He particularly underscored Pupin’s role during World War I when he pledged his entire fortune to help Serbia, responding to warnings about the risks with words that are inscribed in golden letters in the history of Serbian patriotism: "If Serbia perishes, let me perish as well." His esteemed reputation in American society and close friendship with then-U.S. President Woodrow Wilson were crucial in ensuring that the territories of the Austro-Hungarian Empire inhabited by Serbs became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. Serbia and the Serbian people remain eternally grateful to Mihajlo Pupin for his contributions and continue to be inspired by his legacy of patriotism. His influence lives on through generations that follow in his footsteps, driven by education and love for their homeland, concluded Consul General Vladimir Božović. May his memory be eternal and his contributions never forgotten.
